Selket – Egyptian Goddess of Scorpions and Magic

Filed under: Paganism and Spirituality — feyMorgaina @ 15:04

MM,

Selket is an Egyptian goddess I’ve recently discovered.

It is interesting how this goddess came to me. I was at a book festival (Word on the Street) with Nathan. One of the last booths we looked at was for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). They had there a little touch game where a thermoform relief mould was hidden behind a veil, and you had to use your sense of touch to figure out what the image was. My second guess was correct and the lady said I could pick a relief mould of an image as a prize. Of the choices given, an Egyptian depiction appealed to me the most.

I put this relief image away for a little while, but for some reason I was drawn back to it from time to time. I kept looking at it. Then, carefully reading the braille printed at the top, it turned out to be Selket. (I was confused with the braille at first because there was an extra dot at the beginning.)

Thus far, I’ve found out that Selket is goddess of scorpions, magic, childbirth, and nursing. She is a protector and is also loosely associated with the underworld. She is related to the scorching heat of the sun (a death aspect?).

Other forms of her name are Serket, Selqet, Selkit, Selkis, Serqet. Serqet is probably the more common name, but she came to me first as Selket.

A depiction of Selket was found in King Tut’s tomb. Note the similarity of the Selket relief shown below to the image found in King Tut’s tomb.

Selket may have had a festival on or around October 23 (7th Koiak). She did not appear to have any temples, but she had a Priesthood and substantial worship.

Interesting. I will have to spend more time working with this goddess.

Cassandrah

Enneagram – Part 2 and Brain Hemisphere Dominance

Filed under: Paganism and Spirituality — feyMorgaina @ 10:11

MM,

I find the enneagram interesting, but I find the inconsistency in the test scores make me question the use of enneagram. Though those who study the enneagram say that we all have qualities of each of the nine personality types. I guess a balanced personality will have qualities from each type as it is not good to be one extreme or another. Below are my results for some different enneagram tests. I also took a brain dominance test. Turns out I use both hemispheres equally. Huh. That doesn’t surprise me for some reason.

Are You Right or Left Brained?(word pair test)
personality tests by similarminds.com

Left brain dominant individuals are more orderly, literal, articulate, and to the point. They are good at understanding directions and anything that is explicit and logical. They can have trouble comprehending emotions and abstract concepts, they can feel lost when things are not clear, doubting anything that is not stated and proven.

Right brain dominant individuals are more visual and intuitive. They are better at summarizing multiple points, picking up on what’s not said, visualizing things, and making things up. They can lack attention to detail, directness, organization, and the ability to explain their ideas verbally, leaving them unable to communicate effectively.

Overall you appear to have fairly Equal Hemispheres

—————————————–

According to Darwinian theory, optimal evolution takes place with random variation and selective retention. The evolution savvy individual will try many different approaches when faced with a problem and select the best of those approaches. Many historical intellectuals have confessed their advantage was simply considering/exploring/trying more approaches than others. The left brain dominant type suffers from limited approaches, narrow-mindedness. The right brain dominant type suffers from too many approaches, scatterbrained. To maintain balanced hemispheres, you need to exercise both variability and selection. Just as a company will have more chance of finding a great candidate by increasing their applicant pool, an individual who considers a wider set of options is more likely to make quality decisions.

Myers-Briggs and Enneagram Test

Filed under: Paganism and Spirituality — feyMorgaina @ 09:19

MM,

Test time again. Below is a Myers-Brigg type test. I again got INTJ.

INTJ – “Mastermind”. Introverted intellectual with a preference for finding certainty. A builder of systems and the applier of theoretical models. 2.1% of total population.

Free Jung Word Choice Test (similar to MBTI)
personality tests by similarminds.com

2.1% of the total population huh? I wonder if that’s why I find it hard to relate to most people.

Then I did an Enneagram test. I’ve been wondering about the Enneagram for a while. I’ve done a few tests for this and two have pegged me as a 7. Then, I found a book on the Enneagram in the laundry room of our building (we recycle books by leaving them in the laundry room for people to take if it pleases them). Nathan and I went through the nine different personality types and it does seem like 7 is most like me, though I wonder if I might be a 3 in the closet. Hehe. Below are my results from one online Ennegram test.

Enneagram test results

You are most likely a type 7.

Taking wings into account, you seem to be a 7w8.

No personality test is completely accurate. Although several measures were taken to make this test as accurate as possible, there’s always a chance that you are not typed correctly by it. Therefore, when deciding which Enneagram type and wing you are, you might also want to consider the types with the highest test scores on the lists below.

(Note that your lowest scores may be omitted.)
Type 7 – 8.3
Type 1 – 8
Type 5 – 6.7
Type 8 – 6.3
Type 2 – 6.3
Type 9 – 6
Type 6 – 5.7

Wing 7w8 – 11.5
Wing 1w2 – 11.2
Wing 7w6 – 11.2
Wing 1w9 – 11
Wing 8w7 – 10.4
Wing 2w1 – 10.3
Wing 9w1 – 10
Wing 6w7 – 9.9
Wing 5w6 – 9.6
Wing 8w9 – 9.3
Wing 9w8 – 9.2
Wing 6w5 – 9.1
Wing 5w4 – 6.7
Wing 2w3 – 6.3

Enneagram test – Introduction to the Enneagram – Energy and the Enneagram

A description of the 7 personality says that I’m a “pleasure seeker and planner, in search of distraction”. It means that I plan my time to the fullest so that I will hopefully never become bored. Supposedly, 7s are not introspective, even though I keep a personal journal with my deepest thoughts in it. I wonder if perhaps I grew up as a 3 wing 4 and just learned to be a 7. Strange. I will have to read up more on the Enneagram (a very 5 thing to do).

This Week’s Rituals

Filed under: Paganism and Spirituality — feyMorgaina @ 08:03

MM,

I was Priestess for my coven’s ritual this past week. I did a guided meditation involving trees and the deities Odin and Freya. Overall, I thought it went well – some tweaks here and there.

My next ritual is Yule. I offered to do the Yule ritual this year because I had an idea, but I’m still working on it. I still have over three weeks left to write it.

Yesterday was the WCC public ritual. It was the Bard changeover – similar to the Summoner and Hand/maiden changeover. The ritual invested a new person into the role of Bard. This year we have someone who can sing well, and that is always a good thing. Nothing ruins a ritual more than someone who can’t hold even a simple tune. Thus, I predict it will be a good year – chantwise, at least, and hopefully I’m doing a decent job as Summoner.

I’m still enjoying being Summoner. I really feel it was the role for me there, more so than Handmaiden. Although giving up every Sunday night can be draining over a whole year, I’m going to try my best to not miss a Sunday.

Later today, I’m doing a private ritual with Nathan. We’ve been doing private moon rituals for the past year together. It’s nice to be able to share something together. I don’t think there is a ritual that we’ve done together that didn’t make me feel peaceful and content – that is very much a good thing.

Training Update – November 14 and 15, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 07:32

November 14, 2006

I went for a mile run, then went to the do jang to work on some patterns by myself. (I did practice some the day before at the gym, but thought I should practice again.) My run was a slow run since I hadn’t run since near the end of October. My time was 9 minutes 59 seconds. Nearly two minutes slower than my fastest time. 🙁 I chalk that up to being too busy the past few weeks. Hopefully, I can improve my run in the next month or so.

November 15, 2006

I went to the do jang for the 7:00 p.m. class.

“She’s got Skills!” – Video

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 10:52

MM,

This video is remarkable. Motivating. This girl has some extraordinary flexibility. Watch this video.

Here’s the link if you can’t see the video on here – Contortionist Lilia Stepanova from “America’s Got Talent”.

Damn, that just hurts my back thinking of that. Of course I had to try, and yeah that hurts. The flexibility is all in the spine. If only I had started when I was younger, like five.

Well, that’s motivation for me to get back to training and improve my flexibility some more. Don’t think I’ll ever be as flexible as that, but I can still try and see how far I get. I’ll just be happy if I can get into full splits (still a few degrees off 180).

Gym day – November 13, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 10:43

MM,

The gym was closed last week for renovations/repairs. It opened again yesterday – yay! I desperately needed some weight training. Nathan and I went for a little bit of light weight training since we both hadn’t been in for a while due to our crazy schedule recently and the fact that the gym was closed.

It felt good to get some weight training. I can honestly say I like weight training. I actually like the way I feel while I’m doing it. Many people train for the way the look after weight training, but I do it for the way I feel. It feels good and I feel stronger and happier afterwards. Nothing seems to get me out of my November blues better than exercise.

Ritual – November 12, 2006

Filed under: Paganism and Spirituality — feyMorgaina @ 10:38

MM,

Public circle on Sunday was a nice one. The energy was good overall and the ritual has a nice feel. It was about how to create abundance in life not just for ourselves but for others. It reinforced the idea that part of receiving is to be able to give to others. Things need to be in balance. The goddess called that night was Feronia and the god called was Jupiter.

I was having a quiet night as Summoner. I still feel a little tired from the ten day spree of craziness. As long as I don’t get another ten days like that again, I should be fine. I can’t believe it’s the middle of November already. Winter is coming.

Do jang day – November 11, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 10:30

MM,

Saturday I had a black belt meeting and training. I was tired that day, but I stayed for the training. We did our patterns and worked on some kicks. I need to get back into practice some more. I miss it. I’m thinking of just dropping in for open training during the afternoons when there’s not many around. Too many people around during the evenings after a regular class – it gets distracting. Sometimes a nice quiet do jang is great.
