Training Update – November 14 and 15, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 07:32

November 14, 2006

I went for a mile run, then went to the do jang to work on some patterns by myself. (I did practice some the day before at the gym, but thought I should practice again.) My run was a slow run since I hadn’t run since near the end of October. My time was 9 minutes 59 seconds. Nearly two minutes slower than my fastest time. 🙁 I chalk that up to being too busy the past few weeks. Hopefully, I can improve my run in the next month or so.

November 15, 2006

I went to the do jang for the 7:00 p.m. class.

“She’s got Skills!” – Video

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 10:52

MM,

This video is remarkable. Motivating. This girl has some extraordinary flexibility. Watch this video.

Here’s the link if you can’t see the video on here – Contortionist Lilia Stepanova from “America’s Got Talent”.

Damn, that just hurts my back thinking of that. Of course I had to try, and yeah that hurts. The flexibility is all in the spine. If only I had started when I was younger, like five.

Well, that’s motivation for me to get back to training and improve my flexibility some more. Don’t think I’ll ever be as flexible as that, but I can still try and see how far I get. I’ll just be happy if I can get into full splits (still a few degrees off 180).

Gym day – November 13, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 10:43

MM,

The gym was closed last week for renovations/repairs. It opened again yesterday – yay! I desperately needed some weight training. Nathan and I went for a little bit of light weight training since we both hadn’t been in for a while due to our crazy schedule recently and the fact that the gym was closed.

It felt good to get some weight training. I can honestly say I like weight training. I actually like the way I feel while I’m doing it. Many people train for the way the look after weight training, but I do it for the way I feel. It feels good and I feel stronger and happier afterwards. Nothing seems to get me out of my November blues better than exercise.

Do jang day – November 11, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 10:30

MM,

Saturday I had a black belt meeting and training. I was tired that day, but I stayed for the training. We did our patterns and worked on some kicks. I need to get back into practice some more. I miss it. I’m thinking of just dropping in for open training during the afternoons when there’s not many around. Too many people around during the evenings after a regular class – it gets distracting. Sometimes a nice quiet do jang is great.

Ten-day Whirlwind of Craziness

MM,

The start of Samhain week was just the start of my ten-day spree of craziness. After the Samhain festivities were over with (at least that I went to), I had to go to the do jang and help with the black belt test.

Originally, I was planning on running the 10k again, but I wasn’t planning on being sick and exhausted from a busy week. I headed out to the track to check up on the people running the 10k. It was dark by then. The run was scheduled for 6 p.m. Deciding I shouldn’t even try to run (Nathan’s orders), we headed to the do jang. When I got there I found out the black belt test was Friday and Saturday, not Saturday and Sunday. I had left my uniform at home and had to go back to get it. I had an hour and a half still to go home and come back, so Nathan and I decided to go eat dinner and then head home. I got back to the do jang just at 8 p.m. The black belt testees were doing their written test, so I had time to get changed. It was good timing. The test lasted until 11 p.m. Then we were to continue the next day at 12 noon. I got home tired and still a little sick around midnight. I went to bed after eating and washing up.

The next day, Saturday, I woke up around 10-ish and got to the do jang early around 11:45 a.m. The test went from 12 noon to 4 p.m. It was overall a very good test the past two days. Everyone did fairly well. Thus concludes another black belt test. There are now about 16 more black belts added to the do jang this year. I have to say I was happy that I did not need to get up early on Sunday.

Sunday, November 5 I got up early enough for Sunday circle again. I was feeling totally tired and really needed a break. All I could do was hope for a quiet night at WCC and a quiet ritual. Then I found out there was a Steering Committee meeting and election that night at 6 p.m., so I left earlier to make that. It turns out we didn’t have enough people to have a meeting so I was there early and had some time to rest and just putter around before getting dressed as Summoner. Ritual that night was okay. The idea was good, but the execution was a little strange. After ritual, Nathan and I hung out with a friend of mine who is visiting for a few days. I was glad Nathan and him got along. My friend is a very special person. I feel a kinship with him because he is very spiritually connected. Nathan and I got home late that night, but it was a fun night chatting with a friend I don’t see often. On my way home that night, I suddenly felt elated and a weight lifted because my ten-days of going out and not getting any “me” time at home was finally over. 😀 It felt good to get stuff done, but after a while I just don’t feel like being around anyone or doing anything. Thankfully, it wasn’t a full two weeks of craziness.

Yesterday, I was looking forward to some quiet time to myself. I ended up sleeping in late. Then when I was in the bathroom, the fire alarm in the building went off and I heard the landlady telling people to get out of the building. I quickly got dressed, grabbed my purse, my cell phone, my jacket, and slipped on some shoes (slip-on shoes are handy to have around in case of fire), then ran down the stairs. I’m so thankful I live on the third floor. I didn’t even have time to find the cats. They were all hiding under the bed. Anyway, the fire trucks arrived on time and took care of the fire. It seemed to be a smaller fire than the one we had June 2005. I just don’t know why there have been two fires in the past 18 months. People are being careless. It’s just annoying, and makes me nervous about living here. In any case, my day was messed up, and I felt antsy. I ended up staying up last night mostly because I napped for a few hours and woke up at 1 a.m., but also because having a fire that day made me nervous about going to sleep. Thus, I went to sleep in the morning and woke up today late again. This time though, no fire! 🙂

*sigh* Time is running out on me, but I finally got a chance to get some writing done. Hehe. Writing in my journal helps me keep my brain and thoughts organized. I don’t know what I would do without that. Right now, I’m making stew for dinner. Then the next thing I’m going to do is read a bit more. Dinner is almost ready, and I will eat and watch some TV shows. Then hopefully, my brain will work properly and I can think about the rituals I need to write. Once that is done, I need to review my reiki materials again. Loads to do! No wonder my brain just takes a hiatus on me sometimes. I can’t seem to turn off the mental hyperness. At least I’m getting things done.

Okay, I’m starting to feel more relaxed now. Yes, there’s my mind. It doesn’t seem to be floating out in space too much right now. 😀

Do jang days – October 24 and 25, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 20:53

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

I had to drop off my Summoner staff at Lady T’s place first before going to the do jang. I ended up walking for 20 minutes to get to the subway station and got to the do jang at 7:30 p.m. I missed half the class. I took the rest of the class and stayed for another hour to practice on my own.

Wednesday

I went to the do jang and took the 7 p.m. class. I stayed another hour just practicing patterns. I also promised to help someone work on their demo for the test, so I stayed a bit to help with that.

Running Days – October 20 and 23, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 04:45

Friday, October 20, 2006

I went for a two-mile run. I did the first mile in 9 minutes 7 seconds and the second mile in 10 minutes 40 seconds. My total time was 19 minutes 47 seconds. A little slow, but I’ve been a little too busy to run more often.

Monday, October 23, 2006

I went for a 5 km run. Actually the route is 5.7 km, but that’s okay. I managed to run the whole distance. 😀 I was quite tired when I got back, but content. I think if I do a few more two-mile runs next week, I should be fine for the 10k run. I’m just glad I’m not testing this time. It’s good for me to keep up the running though, because I’ll have to do it anyway for my next dan.

My time for the 5.7 km was 40 minutes 28 seconds. It’s slower than my time in the summer, but I think comparable to how I ran the 10k. I think I could have ran more even though I was a little tired. Not sure if I can run the whole 10k yet, but I’ll try to run as much as I can again and see how I feel. Like I said before, it hurts to stop running once you’ve covered around 5 km.

This past weekend was busy. This weekend will be the start of a busy two weeks and I still have much work to do. *sigh* Sometimes I wish there was two of me so I could get more stuff done, but they say be careful what you wish for. Hehe.

Training update – October 14 to 17, 2006

MM,

Training blog update:

October 14, 2006

I went to the do jang at noon and took half of the mixed children’s/adult’s class. Then I stayed for the black belt training. There’s another test in November so the candidates are getting ready for it, but any black belt can take the class.

October 15, 2006

I went to the gym in the afternoon.

Leg lifts
Pull-ups (aka chin-ups, military and parallel)
Dips
Leg press
Hamstring flexor (called seated leg curls)
Hip adductors
Hip abductors
Seated row
Seated chest press
Pectoral fly
Shoulder fly
Shoulder lift (this is called the shoulder press)
Lateral pull down
Back extensor

Free weights:
Situps (on a incline bench; worked out the obliques as well by doing double punches during the situp)
Bicep curls
Pushups

October 17, 2006

I went to the gym again. Majorly sore from the last time I went. Only had a day to recover from the exercise, but it’s good to try to go regularly. Since I hadn’t been doing the weight training much lately, I thought it was good I went when I could.

Free weights:

Bicep curls
Weighted squats
Additional shoulder exercises (front and back shoulder joint)
Wrist strengthening

I did 20 minutes of bicycling. It’s getting a little easier. I should really try to push the cycling up to 30 minutes. Since I haven’t done much running lately, I though the cycling would be good. I still need to do a 5 k run sometime.

Running Days – October 7 and 9, 2006

Filed under: Cass' training blog - martial arts, weights, running — feyMorgaina @ 08:22

MM,

I went for a two-mile run on Saturday, October 7. I was missing my running again. The two-mile run was hard. My time has slowed down a bit since I have not been able to keep up with the running recently. (I blame it on the bad weather in September. It was cold and dark. October so far seems to be warmer and brighter.) The time for my first mile was 9 minutes 6 seconds, more than a minute too slow. The time for the second mile was 9 minutes 4 seconds. My total time was 18 minutes 10 seconds for two miles.

I tried to do another run on Monday, October 9, but I was a little dehydrated and made the mistake of drinking water right before my run. I ended up with cramps at three-quarter of a mile. I basically spent about 17 minutes walking and running a mile and a half route. I didn’t track the time well for this run since I cramped and ended up walking so much. I just gave up on the time and focused on getting the exercise instead. After I was almost home, I managed a sprint. It took that much walking to get rid of the slight cramps.

I plan on getting some more running in this week if I can. Between taekwondo, the gym, and running, it’s a wonder I can stay awake and get things done. I need to increase the amount of running and the distance I run soon because the 10k run at my do jang is on November 3. I have to at least get up to a 5 km (3.25 miles) run. I have to run 5 km at least twice to be ready for the 10k run again.

Okay, it’s raining right now and I’ve been up since 3 a.m. – I think it’s time I get some more food and some rest.
